Forearm fractures more commonly occur in men than women, owing to a higher incidence in men of participation in contact sports, altercations, falls from height, and motor vehicle collisions Anatomy Late complications include the following:Īn isolated fracture to the ulna often called a “nightstick” fracture, most often occurs during an altercation. ComplicationsĮarly complications of radial head or neck fractures or dislocations include the following: The surgical approach depends on the fracture location. Generally the standard of care for radial shaft fractures is open reduction and internal fixation. After swelling subsides, a long arm cast can be added. In the case of nondisplaced radial shaft fractures, initial immobilization in a splint will likely be the preferred treatment option. Non-operative treatment of radial shaft fractures is rare and outcomes of nonsurgical treatment in the past have been poor. If the fractures are not clearly seen on X-rays, delayed X-rays, MRI or CT scan will confirm the diagnosis further. If there is the deformity of the radius, your physician will conduct immediate clinical diagnosis on the injury and will confirm the analysis with the result of the X-rays and will conduct a differential diagnosis that will include the scaphoid and the wrist because fractures of the radius are always accompanied by wrist fractures. Diagnosisĭiagnosis of a radial shaft fracture comes from a history, physical examination and lateral radiographs of the elbow, forearm and wrist. It is located on the lateral side of the forearm parallel to the ulna (in anatomical position with arms hanging at the sides of the body, palms facing forward) between the thumb and the elbow. The radius is the thicker and shorter of the two long bones in the forearm. When an isolated radial shaft fracture occurs, it commonly requires surgery unless the fracture is non-displaced. More commonly, fractures of the radial shaft are associated with injury to the ulna. Radial Shaft FracturesĪn isolated fracture of the radial shaft is an unusual injury. A broken forearm can affect your ability to rotate your arm and even bend or straighten the wrist and elbow. The forearm motion allows us to rotate our palms up or down. A fracture in the forearm can occur near the wrist, in the middle of the forearm or near the elbow. The forearm consists of two relatively parallel bones that connect two joints: elbow and wrist. ![]() However, proper reduction of the radius with concomitant reduction of the distal radioulnar joint and cast immobilization provides good to excellent outcome even if the Galeazzi lesion is primarily not recognized. The forearm is made up of two bones in your lower arm, the radius and ulna. In cases of distal forearm fractures, a possible Galeazzi lesion should be considered. The results were excellent in 23 cases and good in three cases. Thirteen patients were treated with immobilization in a below-elbow cast and nine with an above-elbow cast. Casting after fracture reduction was possible in 22 patients. Eight of 26 (31%) fractures were recognized initially and classified as a Galeazzi lesion. Outcome was assessed using the Gartland-Werley score. In 26 (13%) cases, a Galeazzi lesion was found and these patients formed the study group. One hundred ninety-eight patients with displaced fractures of the radius alone or both bones of the forearm were reviewed. The objective of this retrospectively designed study was to describe all Galeazzi lesions treated at our department during a 3-year period. Treatment in children and adolescents is usually possible with closed reduction and casting. A Galeazzi fracture is defined as a fracture of the radius associated with dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint. Players score one point for each settlement they own and two for each city. The goal of the game is to reach ten victory points. By building settlements adjacent to ports, players may trade with the bank at three-to-one (three of any single resource type) or two-to-one (two of a specific resource) ratios, depending on the port's location. ![]() Players can trade resource cards with each other players may also trade off-island (in effect, with the non-player bank) at a ratio of four-to-one resources for one of any other. On the player's turn, the player may spend resource cards to build roads or settlements, upgrade settlements to cities (which replace existing settlements), or buy development cards. For example, If a player has 9 resource cards, and a 7 is rolled, the player must get rid of 4 cards. In addition, when a 7 is rolled, all players with 8 or more resource cards must discard their choice of half of their cards, rounded down. That player may also steal a resource card from another player with a settlement or city adjacent to the robber's new placement. ![]() There is also a robber token, initially placed on the desert if a player rolls 7, the robber must be moved to another hex, which will no longer produce resources until the robber is moved again. For example, if a player has one city and two settlements adjacent to a grain hex, that player would take four grain resource cards if the corresponding number was rolled. Players with a settlement adjacent to a hex containing the number just rolled receive one card of the corresponding resource cities produce two cards of the corresponding resource. On each player's turn, two six-sided dice are rolled to determine which hexes produce resources. Players build by spending resources (wool, grain, lumber, brick, and ore) that are depicted by these resource cards each land type, with the exception of the unproductive desert, produces a specific resource: hills produce brick, forests produce lumber, mountains produce ore, fields produce grain, and pastures produce wool. In 2016, editions of the game were released with a conventional fixed layout board in this configuration, the hexes of which cannot be rearranged. Newer editions of the game began to depict a fixed layout in their manual, which has been proved by computer simulations to be fairly even-handed, and recommend this to be used by beginners. The game board, which represents the island, is composed of hexagonal tiles ( hexes) of different land types, which are laid out randomly at the beginning of each game. Players build settlements, cities, and roads to connect them as they settle the island. The players in the game represent settlers establishing settlements on the fictional island of Catan. ![]() ![]() This is one of many custom, extra-large Catan boards seen during demonstrations and tournaments at Gen Con. Gameplay A giant game of Catan being played at Gen Con Indy 2003. As of 2020, more than 32 million copies in 40 languages had been sold. Upon its release, The Settlers of Catan became one of the first Eurogames to achieve popularity outside Europe. The game and its many expansions are also published by Catan Studio, Filosofia, GP, Inc., 999 Games, Κάισσα (Káissa), and Devir. Players gain victory points as their settlements grow and the first to reach a set number of victory points, typically 10, wins. Players take on the roles of settlers, each attempting to build and develop holdings while trading and acquiring resources. It was first published in 1995 in Germany by Franckh-Kosmos Verlag (Kosmos) as Die Siedler von Catan ( pronounced ). ![]() ![]() If we drew the electron dot structure for BF 3, boron trifluoride, we will notice that there are three attachment point, and 3 bonds, to the central atom, boron. What is the molecular geometry of BF 3, boron trifluoride? Now that we know the molecular geometry, we can determine the bond angle to be about 105 degrees from our chart. Therefore, the resulting molecular geometry is a a bent geometry. Two of these attachments are bonds and the other two are lone pairs. However, this is not the molecular geometry. ![]() This would make the electron geometry tetrahedral. Notice there are 4 attachments, or, electron groups surrounding oxygen. The answer is the molecular geometry of water would be bent. Practice Example: What is the molecular geometry and bond angle of water (H 2O)? For the most part, this information will have to be memorized. In the table below, you will see the coordination between the number and type of attachments in relation to the bond angles. Notice in the table below how if there are no lone pairs, the molecular geometry and electron geometry will be the same. additionally, we need to know how many of these attachments are bonds and lone pairs. ![]() Firstly, we must know how many total attachments there are. To determine the molecular geometry of a structure we need to know two things. Configurationĭetermining molecular geometry and bond angles Below is a table demonstrating the relationship between the number of bonding partners and these configurations. There are three main types of configurations: linear, trigonal, and tetrahedral. This theory revolves around the idea that electrons repel each other and therefore will bond accordingly. Molecular geometry is usually studied using the VSEPR (valence shell electron pair repulsion) model, which predicts the shape of a molecule based on the repulsion between the electrons in the outermost shell of the atoms.Ĭhemists are able to predict the arrangement of atoms and chemical bonds using the valence-shell electron-pair repulsion theory or VSEPR. The geometry of a molecule can have a big impact on its chemical and physical properties, such as its reactivity and solubility.įor example, the shape of a water molecule (H2O) is bent, which gives it a high surface tension and allows it to dissolve many other substances. It is determined by the bonds between the atoms and any lone pairs of electrons that are present in the molecule. Molecular geometry refers to the three-dimensional structure, or arrangement, of the atoms that make up a molecule.
